Ambulance Service for Pets
Pet Club HK operates the only ambulance service for pets in Hong Kong. It boasts a team of professionally trained pet medics and the vehicles are equipped with oxygen supply systems, stretcher beds, and first aid supplies specifically for pet use.
In an emergency, the ambulance service will contact the nearest hospital and strive to deliver the pet to a vet within the golden period for treatment, increasing their chances of survival. The ambulances can also provide non-emergency transport, including pick-ups or hospital transfers.

What is the meaning of a veterinary clinic?
Veterinary clinics are considered the most common type of pet care facility. Veterinary clinics focus on preventative medicine and health check-ups for pets, and they can perform minor surgical procedures. Veterinary clinics are generally smaller in scale than animal hospitals because they offer a more limited range of services.
Why is it called vet?
The word “vet” is a shortened version of “veterinarian,” which refers to an animal doctor. This term was shortened to “vet” in the mid-19th century, and within a few decades, it gave rise to the verb “to vet,” meaning “to perform a medical check-up on (an animal)”. This verb was soon applied to humans, with its meaning broadened to “to scrutinize a person or thing; to check for flaws”.
How do I visit a vet?
- Finding the Right Veterinarian: First, find a vet that is a good fit for you, your expectations, and your budget. Find a vet and staff that you feel comfortable with and who will fit your and your pet’s needs. Choose a vet who seems interested in listening to and answering your questions. Also, note that while a good vet knows a lot about a lot, they may not always know all the answers immediately. A good vet should be willing to research or refer you to a specialist for further treatment if needed.
- Consider Convenience: Having a veterinarian that is located nearby is ideal not only for routine matters but especially when your pet is sick or has an emergency. Ask about after-hours emergency care before an emergency happens. Many vets may refer you to an emergency clinic for after-hours care or charge an additional fee for emergency appointments.
- Understand Your Budget: Before deciding to add a new pet to your family, familiarize yourself with the costs associated with healthcare and make a plan for how you will pay for these costs most effectively. Just like people, all pets will require healthcare including wellness care, sick care, dental care, and emergency care. Veterinary costs can be high, so it’s important to budget appropriately for these expenses as they arise.
- Have Topics Ready to Discuss: Be prepared to ask your veterinarian about a variety of topics related to your pet’s health and well-being. This is especially important for your pet’s first visit to the veterinarian. Topics should include:
- Behavior
- Dental Care
- Diet
- Exercise
- Health Concerns
- Parasite Prevention
- Training
- Vaccinations
- Wellness Care
- Communicate With Your Veterinary Team: Communicating effectively with your veterinary team is a two-way street. Before your appointment, take some time to write down your concerns and questions for the vet. Take notes on the responses so you have accurate information when you leave. If you don’t understand something your vet says, ask for further clarification. It’s not unreasonable to ask about the reasons for and the cost of medications and tests. If costs are a concern, they may also be able to offer you alternative options that are possible.
- Be On Time for Your Appointment: Veterinary hospitals are busier now than ever before. This is due to the increased number of people getting new pets, but also because of a veterinarian shortage. Allow plenty of time to arrive at the veterinary hospital in advance of your appointment. If you are late, many vets may no longer be able to accommodate the delayed appointment or may have to limit the time they can spend with your pet. It is best to arrive a few minutes early so you can complete any necessary paperwork. If your veterinarian offers patient forms online, fill them out at home and bring them with you so that you are ready to go for your appointment. The less rushed you are, the less stressed your pet will feel.
- Prepare a Carrier for Your Pet: Small animals, such as cats, ferrets, and hamsters, as well as birds, should be in a carrier when you bring them in. Pets should at least be on a leash, though small pets may be better off in a carrier.
- Inform the Staff About Your Pet: Let the office staff know if your pet doesn’t play well with others. It might be best to have it wait in the car with you until the vet is ready for the appointment. Call ahead to ask if the clinic is on schedule so you don’t end up waiting too long.
- Bring Relevant Medical Records: Your veterinarian will need some basic information on your animal friend, especially if it is your first time bringing them in. Keep notes on the following with you:
- Name and dosage of all medications your pet is on
- Type of food they eat
- Their eating habits
- Their toilet habits
- Any recent travel or tick bites
- Past medical records, including vaccination history
- List any medications or supplements your pet is taking, as well as the food you are feeding them.
- Your adoption papers from the shelter or paperwork from a responsible breeder.
- Ask About a Fecal Sample: Your vet may also need a stool sample. Ask about this beforehand. If you have a small animal like a bird or hamster, you may not need to collect any: It’s pretty likely your pet will provide one on the way to the appointment or while you’re at the office.
- Bring Comfort Items for Your Pet: Going to the vet can be stressful for your companion. Bring their favorite toys and blankets.
- Ask About Feeding Instructions: Ask if it’s okay to feed them before the visit—some health screenings require the animal to fast beforehand. (Water is fine—you don’t want them to get dehydrated.) You can bring their favorite treats if feeding is allowed.
- Know Your Budget: Know your budget, as well. This will help the veterinarian know how extensive the checkup should be. Some people and vets prefer their pets to have regular blood work. Others might accept the basics, such as listening to the animal’s heart and examining its eyes, nose, ears, teeth, and rear end. If the exam reveals that your pet needs treatment, figure out how much you’re prepared to spend.
- Don’t be Afraid to Ask Questions or Take Notes: That’s what the vet is there for.
